Hope in the Hard Places
How Purpose-Fueled Leadership Sustains You in Stressful Seasons
Hey Leaders,
Leadership is not always a mountaintop moment.
Sometimes it’s sitting in the quiet after a tough conversation.
Sometimes it’s walking into a building that feels heavy with tension.
Sometimes it’s standing in a hallway, steadying your breath after hearing hard news—again.
It’s in those exact moments—the messy, unpredictable, emotionally charged ones—that leading with purpose and hope matters most.
We often talk about hope as a vision for the future. But when everything feels uncertain, hope is not a distant dream. It’s a present anchor. A lifeline. A mindset that helps you hold steady when everything else feels out of control.
💭 What Story Am I Telling Myself?
One of the most powerful leadership questions is deceptively simple:
“What story am I telling myself right now?”
This question saved me during some of my hardest days as a school leader. I remember one morning in particular. I had just supported a teacher through a deeply traumatic event—her third crisis in as many weeks. I sat in my office, hands trembling, and caught myself spiraling into a story:
“I’m not doing enough.”
“Why can’t I fix this?”
“I must be failing.”
That moment, I paused. I took a deep breath. And I asked myself the question:
“Brandi, what story are you telling yourself?”
I realized I was writing a narrative of inadequacy instead of truth. The truth was—I was showing up. Holding space. Offering safety and connection. That mattered.
The 3 P’s Reset Tool: Pause. Perspective. Purpose.
In messy seasons, this is the tool I return to again and again:
1. Pause
Take a breath. Step away, even briefly. Regulate your nervous system. Give yourself permission to not react on autopilot.
2. Perspective
Name the story you’re telling yourself. Then ask: What else might be true? Reframe with curiosity instead of judgment.
3. Purpose
Reconnect with your “why.” Even in chaos, purpose offers clarity. It’s your compass.
Whether you’re in a school hallway, a boardroom, or your car after a hard day—this 3-step tool can help you reset without shutting down.
🧠 Regulate Before You Lead
Leading through chaos means leading yourself first. Emotional regulation is not weakness—it’s wisdom.
Here are a few strategies grounded in self-efficacy:
Name it to tame it: “I’m feeling overwhelmed—and I’m allowed to feel that.”
Ground in the present: Try the 5-4-3-2-1 method (5 things you see, 4 you can touch, etc.)
Micro-boundaries: Even 5 minutes of quiet, a walk outside, or one deep exhale can shift your state.
You don’t have to “have it all together.” You just have to lead with integrity in the moment you’re in.
🕯 You Are Not Alone in the Mess
Hope isn’t about pretending things are fine. It’s about holding on to what matters when things aren’t.
When you lead with purpose—even through stress, grief, and exhaustion—you give others permission to do the same.
You remind your team, your students, your colleagues:
✨ We can do hard things.
✨ We can feel deeply and lead wisely.
✨ We can find meaning, even here.

“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.” — Hebrews 6:19 (NIV)
As a middle school social worker, I once sat with a student who had just had another outburst. She muttered, “I don’t care. No one ever stays.”
I paused, took a breath, and reminded myself:
My presence matters.
I simply said, “I’m not leaving. You’re not alone.”
She didn’t say anything—but she stayed.
That quiet moment didn’t solve everything, but it planted hope. Leadership in hard places isn’t about having answers. It’s about showing up with purpose, even when things feel messy.

“Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on Earth.” — Muhammad Ali
When Brandon went missing, the community searched the creek banks and woods, desperate to find him. Their unwavering service and care showed that helping others is more than kindness—it’s the rent we pay for our place on Earth. From that loss, a spark of hope was born, reminding us all that service to others is how we truly belong.
Let’s honor that legacy by stepping up to serve our communities today. How will you pay your rent and spark hope where you are?
