A Guide for Female Leaders

Leadership, Grief, and Resilience

February 02, 20263 min read

Leadership is rarely easy, and women in leadership face unique pressures; both professionally and personally. From managing complex systems to navigating high-stakes decisions, it’s easy to feel pulled in every direction, carrying responsibility far beyond what any one person should bear.

Tension: I’ve seen it firsthand. Outwardly, leaders look capable, confident, and put together. But behind the scenes, many are quietly unraveling. Burnout isn’t a failure. It’s a signal and a call to realign, recalibrate, and reconnect with the purpose that first drew you to lead.

The Invisible Load Women Carry

Women often juggle an invisible load: mental strain, guilt over not giving enough to work, family, or themselves, and pressure to perform perfectly. These expectations don’t look the same for men and acknowledging that difference is essential.

I’ve learned that “work-life harmony” is far more practical than chasing elusive “work-life balance.” Communicating with family, asking for help, and leaning on a support system aren’t weaknesses...they’re survival strategies. Networking with other women in leadership provides mentorship, hope, and accountability.

“Women are often terrible at asking for help but it’s essential. Build your community, and lean on it.”

When Leadership Gets Hard

There are seasons when the challenges pile up: conflicting expectations, long meetings, organizational politics, and unprecedented crises. The work can feel relentless, pressure overwhelming, and the systems you’re responsible for impossible to manage.

During these moments, I realized: leadership isn’t a title, a role, or a performance metric. Leadership is who you are when no one is applauding. It’s how you respond when pressure rises. It’s what you protect when everything feels urgent.

Finding Joy Amid Challenges and Grief

On a recent interview on the Lead with H.O.P.E. Podcast, Dr. Lindsey Hall shared her deeply personal story of grief when her family lost a child. She spoke about the importance of finding purpose and joy even in life’s most painful moments.

“If you’re going to go through hell, don’t come out empty-handed. There’s always a message in the mess.” —Dr. Lindsey Hall

Her words remind us that acknowledging grief, embracing emotion, and finding gratitude for life’s blessings—family, community, and small joys—creates a resilience that fuels leadership in ways ambition alone never can.

Key Advice for Female Leaders

  • Persist. The world needs your voice, vision, and leadership. Don’t give up.

  • Build support systems. Ask for help. Connect with mentors. Lean on peers.

  • Protect alignment and well-being. Your values and health matter more than any role or title.

  • Seek joy and purpose now. Life is happening today—not just at retirement or when stress eases.

  • Embrace community and perspective. Growth, resilience, and clarity come through relationships and reflection.

Leadership isn’t about surviving; it’s about thriving. It’s about stepping into your fullest potential while honoring your humanity, values, and the people and purpose that inspire you to lead.

“You’re not just leading for today; you’re leading for the impact that lasts long after the stress and struggle pass.”
