Who Are You, Really? Blog Post
Coffee, Identity, and Leading with Hope

Grab your favorite mug and get comfortable! On this episode of the Lead with Hope podcast, I sit down with Dr. Eric Moyer for a heart-to-heart that feels less like a lecture and more like catching up with an old friend. Dr. Moyer is a former math teacher turned educational psychologist, and we dive deep into his book, Redeeming Identity, to help us figure out who we are when the "labels" fall away.
The Knock-Off Purse Test: Are You Living a Counterfeit Life?
Remember about a decade or so ago when those knock-off "designer" purses were everywhere? From a distance, they looked perfect, but if you looked closely at the stitching or felt the material, you knew it wasn’t the real thing. Dr. Moyer uses that same idea for our lives. Our culture tells us we can "create" ourselves into anything we want, but we often end up settling for a counterfeit identity. It’s an identity that feels comfortable and looks "close enough" to the world, but it isn’t the genuine, high-quality version of who we were truly designed to be
The "Four Ps" Framework
If you feel like you’re just going through the motions, Dr. Moyer suggests looking at your life through these four lenses:
Principles: What are the core truths you actually live by?
Perspectives: How are you choosing to view the world around you?
Purposes: What is your ultimate "why"?
Priorities: How are you actually spending your 24 hours?
Leading Without Burning Out
For the leaders out there feeling stretched thin, Eric shares a radical tip: Write down your top 25 responsibilities, circle the top five, and then (here’s the kicker) avoid the other 20 at all costs. Those bottom 20 are the "time-drainers" that keep you from your true purpose.
Lessons from a Whale
We even talk about Jonah... you know, the guy who ended up in the fish. Dr. Moyer points out that Jonah knew the truth about God wanted him to be but struggled to align his own perspective with it. It’s a "positive struggle" we all face: letting go of the old version of ourselves to grow into the person we're meant to become.
The Transformation Process
Transformation isn't a one-time event; it’s a journey of three S's:
Submit: Yielding your perspective to a higher truth.
Sacrifice: Letting go of the habits that don't serve you anymore.
Substitute: Replacing the old with God’s purpose and light.
As Eric says, the best part is that God isn't finished with us yet.
